Unit 1

Introduction and Overview of the Photographer’s Journey

OUR introductory discussion provides an overview of the vocabulary and concepts we use to structure our journey.

We begin by fashioning a definition of visual desire, which is the recognition of what we see and want to make images of.

We describe the use and function of first-person voice and form/content as used in the voice of inquiry.

We discuss the idea of subject matter, and challenge each other to reflect on what draws us to photography and informs our visual desire.

Finally, we discuss why archiving is essential concerning editing, sharing and critique.

  • What is visual desire? Why do we shoot?

  • What is the role of a camera and camera control in photography?

  • What is the difference between an analog SLR, DSLR and a camera in a mobile phone?

  • What is first-person voice, narrative, and how does it work here?

  • How do we find our subject?

  • What is success: How do we give and receive critique?

  • How do we keep track of what we do, find it later, and re-share it with ourselves and others?
